Starting with a single cellist on the floor of the National Air and Space Museum's "Milestones of Flight" gallery, and swelling to 120 musicians, The U.S. Air Force Band exhilarated museum visitors with its first-ever flash mob. The four-minute performance featured an original arrangement of "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring/Joy to the World," led by the band's commander and conductor, Col. Larry H. Lang. Unsuspecting museum visitors including tourists and school groups were astonished as instrumentalists streamed into the gallery from behind airplanes and space capsules, and vocalists burst into song from the Museum's second floor balcony. http://www.usafband.af.mil/events/

All roads lead to New York City this week as the annual New York International Auto Show kicks off a ten day public celebration of everything automobile starting Friday April 14th. In a tribute to the city’s role in making the auto industry as ubiquitous as it is today, the show will feature a special exhibition curated by the Saratoga Automobile Museum that pays homage to the more than 100 different automobile manufacturers that once called New York state their home. Some, such as Pierce Arrow and Franklin made an enduring mark, while many others have nearly disappeared into the pages of history. With New Yorkers of the early 1900s owning 50 percent more cars than the residents of any other state, demand for cars turned the wheels of entrepreneurship. Buffalo was home to the Thomas Flyer that, in 1908, won the challenging 169-day New York to Paris race, a competition that took the participants west across the United States, Asia and Europe to Paris. Long Island coachbuilders Brewster & Company did bodywork on an electric car in 1896. Later, from 1915 through 1925, the company used available components to build their own cars and eventually was acquired by Rolls Royce. Ultimately, the automobile industry remains integral to New York remaining the economic powerhouse of the nation. ****** From the minds of some of today’s greatest innovators, new concepts continue to emerge, presented to public at the 2017 New York International Auto Show. While everyone is gushing at the all-new Buick Regal wagon that refuses to be called a wagon, RPM News Weekly turns its eyes to Lucid Motors, a Silicon Valley-based luxury mobility company that recently unveiled the Lucid Air electric vehicle. Promising a range of 400 miles on a charge and fitted with an in-house designed powertrain, the Air ventures into entirely new space with its form, proportions and technology. Short on specifics about the proprietary systems in the Air up until now, Lucid comes to the New York International Auto Show at a time when most industry watchers anticipate rapid changes in the transportation landscape in the near future. We’ll see where the Lucid leads and keep you posted.

Presented September 21, 2013. 'Pablo Picasso: Life with Art' - Dakin Hart, Senior Curator, The Noguchi Museum, New York In this presentation Dakin Hart explores Picasso’s transition to ceramic practice after World War Two. Tracing the personal, social and political factors which lead to Picasso’s desire to create objects which merged both sculpture and painting to create a visual legacy which would withstand the test of time. Organized to coincide with the public opening of the exhibition 'Return to Earth: Ceramic Sculpture of Fontana, Melotti, Miró, Noguchi, and Picasso, 1943–1963', this symposium offers a number of new perspectives on the often-overlooked, yet ground-breaking work in fired clay of some of the most important artists of the 20th century. Until the beginning of the 20th century, glass bottles - for pharmacies, breweries, and dairy farms - were all produced by hand. Demand in the 1800's was so tremendous that bottle making was the first mass production industry in the United States. The National Bottle Museum in Saratoga County, New York preserves that history. VOA's June Soh introduces us to interesting and centuries-old handmade bottles in the museum.

Elevator Video: http://youtu.be/eIA70JeWwow Offering guests all the five-star facilities that have eluded the city for so long. Located on a corner of the old town that overlooks the Capitolio — a gleaming replica of Washington's dome — the Saratoga boasts a rich and colorful heritage. In the 1930s, writers, artists and socialites gathered under its colonnade to enjoy acts like the Anacaona all-girl orchestra, a band of sisters who played salsa-style son music decades before the world heard of the Buena Vista Social Club. But not long after Fidel Castro's revolution, the hotel had deteriorated into a seedy boarding house. An international consortium rebuilt the Saratoga in 2005, maintaining its original neoclassical façade. Floor-to-ceiling French windows with mahogany shutters frame wrought-iron balconies, and inside there's Internet access in each room, wi-fi in communal areas and top-end gym equipment. Nothing says you're in Cuba more than a cigar and a mojito. Savor both in the Saratoga's airy, palm-filled atrium cooled by antique ceiling fans, or indulge in the inventive tapas menu at the Anacaona Restaurant, which spices up Cuba's typical cuisine by adding European flair. The hotel's rooftop pool overlooks the Partagas cigar factory, the opera house and, around the corner, Floridita, one of Ernest Hemingway's favorite bars and home of the Daiquiri cocktail. A modern hotel with lots of nostalgia. Many lovers of the Cuban cigars "Habanos" have a perfect operation base in it, because of its proximity with the legendary cigar factory "Partagás" and its "Casa del Habano" a very crowded place by smokers from all over the world.

Police believe at least three burglaries that netted hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of horse racing trophies and memorabilia from museums were committed by the same thief, says Saratoga Springs Assistant Police Chief John Catone.Surveillance video from the United States Golf Association museum in New Jersey shows someone entering two rooms and working quickly to remove some of the items. Catone said Thursday similar video from the National Racing Museum and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs is still in the possession of state police analysts. The director of the Hall of Fame, Chris Dragone, told CBS 6 he holds out hope that the items taken from the hall, including the 1903 Belmont Stakes trophy, still exist. We're still hopeful we're going to see these trophies again, Dragone said. He said that almost two months after the September 12 burglary, people at the museum are still a little bit in shock. The director of the Harness Racing Museum and Hall of Fame in Goshen, Janet Terhune, said she believes about $360,000 worth of trophies stolen in December must have been melted down by now. She told CBS6 News that in January she let Dragone know that investigators in New Jersey thought it possible that the USGA case and hers were connected. The USGA burglary happened in the spring of 2012, shortly after trophies were also stolen from the nearby Somerset Hills Country Club.Catone says some of the burglaries featured similar break-ins, similar tools and were completed in under three minutes, leading investigators to believe the thief had spent time in each place becoming familiar with the layout and the locations of the valuables.Catone told CBS6 News a helpful dealer in Connecticut contacted police about a week after the Saratoga Springs burglary, reporting someone had contacted him about selling trophies. Arrangements were made but the person never showed up, Catone said. Still, he says that dealer suggested police alert certain high-end dealers in New York City where a thief might try to unload such items.
